Oded Halahmy (b. 1938)
Bio
Oded Halahmy was born in Bagdad, Iraq. At the age of 13 he moved to Israel. He studied art in England before moving to Canada where he taught at the Ontario College of Art from 1969-1970. He moved to New York City in 1971 and has lived and worked there since. Halahmy’s sculptures are part of several important collections, including the Guggenheim, New York, the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C., and the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, as well as other public and private collections worldwide.
Open is about sitting or resting. It was constructed from light wood with wax applied for texture, then cast in bronze in the lost wax process. It was first exhibited in Halahmy’s North American debut one man show at the Pollock Gallery in Toronto in 1968.
